Chapter Thirteen
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
— Jeremiah 29:11
Father Amadeo
I spend an eternity with my back pressed against the door of her cell, questioning my morality for the umpteenth time.
She called me a monster. I am a monster. I could've gotten my point across in a different way. But the man in me saw an innocent, sweet virgin, and wanted to corrupt her. What I've done is as far away from a godly deed as you could imagine. And yet I have no regrets.
I make my way to the bedroom a broken man. I pass the control room, knowing there's no point going in there unless I want to torture myself more. But I can't sleep either. I can't pretend she isn't there. I can't pretend I haven't just... Hurt her. Shown her pain that will give her nightmares for the rest of her life.
I walk deliriously into the control room, picking up my phone and calling a number I've memorized long ago. Valentino picks up right away.
"Can you come?" I ask him gruffly. "I need help."
"I'm on my way."
It's not often an older brother seeks his junior's help, but this time, I can't help it. I need him.
He arrives less than twenty minutes later, every second of which I spend pacing the room, hating myself for what I've done while at the same time convincing myself it was supposed to be this way all along. I hear his car approaching moments later, and I run down the stairs to meet him.
I have to give props to my brother for not even flinching when he sees me. He merely gives me a curt not and wordlessly follows me into the house. I head straight for the control room, and we settle in front of the camera feed displaying a screaming Carlotta. I turn off the volume while Valentino leans in closer to watch the screen, his lips forming a thin line of disapproval. Because he's smart enough not to argue with me, he doesn't mention her yelling my name at the top of her voice.
"Pretty, isn't she?” Valentino mutters. “Why did you bruise her?”
I don’t answer him. Something awakens deep within me as I watch her naked body illuminated by the night view of the camera. I click out of the screen, not wanting my own brother to see her naked.
"She's something alright," I mutter under my breath. "Look, I need your help with something, fratello."
"I figured," Valentino mutters. "What is it now?"
"Is the family still gathering for mass tomorrow?"
"Of course," he nods. "I made some bullshit excuse about why you won't be there, though, like you asked."
"I want to be there," I say. "And I want Carlotta to be there, too."
"Are you insane?" he hisses instantly. "You're putting yourself directly in the line of fire if you do that. Tomassi's men will find out you're the one who has here, and then we'll all be fucked.
